So Many States, So Many Hours, So Many Miles

Sooooo last night we made it all the way across Oklahoma and stayed the night in Carthage, Missouri. We stopped for lunch that day at this really good barbecue place:

20140802-221236-79956042.jpg
We got to the campground with lots of time.. Set up and had dinner and marshmallows! It was really small and family owned and the lady thanked us in the morning before we left, cute. Their sign was really cool at night:

20140802-221436-80076190.jpg
We had planned to leave right away in the morning, but the tents were wet, so I took some pictures:

20140802-233808-85088731.jpg
Then we had the last of my cousin’s delicious apples for breakfast:

20140802-233843-85123292.jpg
I slept for most of the ride today due to a lack of caffeine, but woke up for lunch at a Deli in Cuba, MO and for a photo op of the arch:

20140802-234023-85223918.jpg
Also for another large cross:

20140802-234052-85252598.jpg
And for a quick walk around leg stretch at a corvette/VW museum:

20140802-234157-85317501.jpg
Then we drove for ages, I slept, we had pizza for dinner and we spotted yet another large cross:

20140802-234242-85362861.jpg
We stopped for the night in a motel on Dayton, Ohio, so we can get out a lot faster in the morning, only 8 hours and 45 minutes until home!

All the Fun!

So we drove down to my cousin’s house and got to stay there! Very fun since we don’t see each other very often. Post a very delicious dinner complete with a homemade apple pie with apples of their own tree and some wonderful chatter, we headed outside with their adorable dog and I captured this:

20140801-125645-46605799.jpg
Then in the morning we had Nescafé Clásico just like I drank in BsAs! Super awesome. And we had cinnamon sugar on our English muffins which I don’t think I had had since my grandmother have it to me. So weird how family works!! Goodbye photo after such good time together with Centavo:

20140801-130640-47200156.jpg
Then some sweet shots of the mountains:

20140801-130712-47232810.jpg
Then a tasty lunch later on – I had tacos and mom had a frito bowl, it was Fritos and homemade chile and cheese, weird but super good!:

20140801-130832-47312434.jpg
Then we got to Texas and ending up camping in the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon:

Then more photos of the canyon and photos of the cabins that were built by the CCC during the depression!:

We are out of Texas and in Oklahoma now… And we plan on staying in Missouri tonight! Clearly a lot of driving ahead of us today!

Calm Day in Santa Fe

So we ate some breakfast and then walked towards the center to hit up some museums. The first one we went to was a photography gallery that had some Ansel Adams and some Alfred Stieglitz as well as some other photographers:

20140729-152322-55402490.jpg
We spotted a cool building before that:

20140729-152416-55456210.jpg
Then we headed to the Georgia O’Keeffe museum which was cool because my grandma Molly really liked Georgia O’Keeffe. In the gift shop I bought some prints for Sarah for her birthday and one for myself. It was a great gallery:

20140729-152632-55592784.jpg
Then we had some crepes for lunch and then headed to the Governor’s Palace and the New Mexico State Museum, both with great exhibits. One room contained this:

20140729-152743-55663120.jpg
Outside the state museum I got Sarah to pose for some photos, she wasn’t too pleased in the end:

20140729-152831-55711710.jpg

20140729-152852-55732620.jpg
The state museum also had this great display of hanging arrows at one point:

20140729-152932-55772631.jpg
Then I caught a photo of a hummingbird moth:

20140729-153019-55819614.jpg
After a pretty walk home:

20140729-153150-55910853.jpg

20140729-153204-55924252.jpg
We headed up to Becca’s where she gave us a tour of Randall Davey’s house and studio:

20140729-153434-56074285.jpg

20140729-153443-56083587.jpg
The house is on the property, it’s called the Randall Davey Audubon Center, and they give tours of the house… His studio (the photos with the big window in it) was left exactly the same after he died and the house pretty much the same too. Becca said the interns used to have to live in his house (so in a museum pretty much) and she’s quite glad that she gets to live in the guest house instead. Then we walked around and I took lots of photos:

And some family photos:

20140729-154454-56694927.jpg

20140729-154454-56694090.jpg
And dinner at a tasty brewery.
Then in the morning we headed back to the market for some vegetables and then had coffee and sweets here:

20140729-154618-56778059.jpg
Mom wanted to be sure that I mentioned that they used linguini as stirrers. Then we walked to the center and I got some cool photos:

The we check out a Chuck Jones Gallery that was full of Disney art which was awesome:

And then we had some fajitas from a street vendor:

20140729-155421-57261956.jpg

20140729-155550-57350742.jpg

20140730-115920-43160514.jpg

20140730-120719-43639967.jpg

20140730-120719-43639128.jpg
Then another absurd Sarah photo shoot a top a rock:

20140730-120850-43730254.jpg

20140730-120851-43731946.jpg

And then back to Becca’s:

20140730-121005-43805909.jpg

20140730-121002-43802008.jpg
And while waiting for Becca, Rockin’ Roz watches the birds:

20140730-121137-43897207.jpg
Then we came down the hill to our place for one last dinner. While trying to eat our dinner outside, it poured on us so we headed in to escape the rain and were later greeted by a rainbow!:

20140730-121326-44006451.jpg
Then we had a birthday celebration for Sarah and my birthdays with everyone together. With a sweet cake I might add haha:

20140730-121413-44053966.jpg
And of course since the sunglasses were made specifically for children, they fit right on Becca’s face:

20140730-121738-44258546.jpg

20140730-121737-44257436.jpg

20140730-121738-44258290.jpg
Then we got up early in the morning to go have breakfast with Becca before she had to work. We went to this place called Chocolate Maven. It was really good and you could see into the kitchen as the people worked. We got to watch them making filled croissants:

20140730-122000-44400407.jpg

20140730-121959-44399593.jpg

20140730-122001-44401214.jpg
Then we met Becca’s coworkers and then said goodbye to her, but not without some final photos:

20140730-124150-45710016.jpg

20140730-124153-45713035.jpg
Now we are just cleaning up the house and packing up the car:

20140730-124330-45810928.jpg
We might stop at one more museum but then we are heading down to Albuquerque to drop Sarah at the airport. Then we are heading farther South to Las Cruces to stay with our cousin Centavo!!

Standard

Intensity in Santa Fe

So Becca came over in the morning and we had breakfast and then headed to the farmers market to get some food. It was really nice out:

20140727-222909-80949798.jpg

20140727-222926-80966557.jpg
The lilac ladies won, in our opinion, for best booth:

20140727-223011-81011277.jpg then we grocery shopped a bit and had burgers for dinner:

20140727-223049-81049562.jpg

20140727-223058-81058274.jpg

20140727-223107-81067338.jpg
As you can see from the photos, the house is original adobe, pretty awesome!!
Then we headed up to where Becca lives, which is right on the property of the Audubon, it was quite incredible:

20140727-223319-81199941.jpg

20140727-223326-81206807.jpg

20140727-223331-81211712.jpg

20140727-223337-81217088.jpg
Then in the morning, we had French toast and all went to Quaker Meeting:

20140727-223603-81363874.jpg
Becca’s been going and my grandma was Quaker so it was a cool experience! We checked out some cool art on the road:

20140727-223859-81539866.jpg
Then after some more shopping and a monsoon with hail and lunch, we got on the train to Albuquerque to get Sarah. The view was awesome:

20140728-094105-34865634.jpg

20140728-094110-34870439.jpg

20140728-094115-34875531.jpg

20140728-094120-34880155.jpg

20140728-094137-34897890.jpg
Then after we found Sarah we decided to get some drinks before our train back to Santa Fe. We chose this place:

20140728-094338-35018721.jpg
Looks family friendly right?? Haha not so much, we were a bit out of place. But my Aunt Toby called me and we all got to talk to her and that was great!!! Then we took the train back, with no hiccups until the stop before the end of the line (our stop) where they announced it would be a while before they got to Santa Fe depot because a car was on the tracks. It was rumbling thunder but we decided to walk it and saw this:

20140728-094715-35235783.jpg
Crazy. The train was cool though. When the doors closed, instead of beeping it went “meep meep” like road runner. Quite amusing. The train is called rail runner, so has quite a road runner theme:

20140728-094840-35320268.jpg

20140728-094857-35337416.jpg
We somehow walked for ages and ages with Sarah’s huge suitcase and justtttt beat the rain. When it rains here, it pours. We bought snacks earlier at Trader Joe’s and it poured when we leaving and everything was flooded. We got to Tune-up Cafe for dinner and as soon as we got inside it started dumping rain again. It’s also super windy here which makes it even more insane. But dinner was super tasty, Sarah and I shared a tamale and enchiladas. Mmm. Then we got back and I gave Becca all her presents from Buenos Aires:

20140728-095436-35676542.jpg
Plus a Maté and Yerba. And Sarah got a framed card of Papa Francisco to hang in her house. Becca has to work today, so we are going to hit up some museums!

Standard

We Are in Santa Fe!!

So we got out of Dodge, but it wasn’t easy. We ate our breakfast, checked out and headed to the Ford dealership. The news wasn’t terrible, the part had shipped but it hadn’t been delivered yet. The guy was going to go find it and was pretty sure it would be in by 2:30. We were just hoping that he was right that that was the problem. So we needed something to do. We headed off to am antique mall we had seen the day before and came out with all kinds of glorious things. Dad got an old tennis racket from Cortland, Mom got a Dodge City shot glass because she wanted a souvenir and I got the coolest things. The first was a plate from LBJ’s presidency with his face in the center and all the presidents before him’a faces surrounding his face. I got another plate too that has the Kennedy family on it. The best find though was this Kennedy board game all about social standing and kinda like clue that was only on the market for a year… Because they took it off after he was assassinated. So interesting! We are going to try to play. It’s only missing two cards and the die!:

20140726-071601-26161572.jpg
Then we still had time to kill so we headed to the old Depot where we got a tour:

20140726-071715-26235932.jpg

20140726-071734-26254860.jpg
The depot was renovated by a theater company who also added on a theater. They must have had a lot of money because everything was incredible. The costume room was insane. To think if our costume designer in High School, the beloved Mrs. Wentlent, had this!:

20140726-072022-26422697.jpg

20140726-072032-26432494.jpg

20140726-072039-26439480.jpg

20140726-072047-26447642.jpg
So then it was back to the Ford dealership to wait. Mom and I went and bought some cookies at some point and I was set with those and my puzzles:

20140726-072213-26533218.jpg
But then the guy told dad that they couldn’t get the program to load .. It started to get late and we started to contemplate a rental again, when the guy came in and said that it had just all downloaded it and they were taking it for a test drive. He test drove it forever but then we finally left, cheering. We cheered at the Kansas/Oklahoma border too. We drove for a bit and then stopped for a quick dinner at Rockin’ As Cafe in Boise City, Oklahoma. Then we hit some pretty great views:

20140726-072859-26939143.jpg

20140726-072925-26965937.jpg

20140726-072932-26972748.jpg

20140726-072943-26983773.jpg
Not the greatest photos, but we were moving fast! Now, I’m an idiot. I had to lean across the car to get those photos and to do so I put the across the body part of my seatbelt behind my back for a second. Welp, then I forgot. A bit later we hit a checkpoint and dumb me was too excited about the checkpoint to think about the fact that my seatbelt wasn’t on right…. Needless to say I didn’t get a citation, but I almost did. How crazy:

20140726-073525-27325704.jpg
Then we had an event free drive to the house we are staying in, it’s super cute! :

Trying to Get the Hell Out of Dodge

Sooooo we are still in Dodge. After the museum we went back to the hotel and Mom washed some clothes in the sink since she’s running out of clothes because we were already supposed to be in Santa Fe:

20140725-083255-30775768.jpg
Then we headed to Kate’s for a late lunch/early dinner:

20140725-083557-30957833.jpg
Momma got a big beer and an equally large taco:

20140725-083629-30989408.jpg

20140725-083628-30988524.jpg
Dad and I had burgers and I’d argue it was the best food we have had yet. Then we drove back to the hotel we checked out of in the morning and got a new room:

20140725-083819-31099037.jpg
Then we hung out for a bit before heading to coldstone for some ice cream:

20140725-083856-31136739.jpg

20140725-083857-31137620.jpg
Then we played some cards with our cards we got from the visitors center:

20140725-084239-31359968.jpg
They’re from the casino! So cool.
Well hopefully we are gonna get the hell out of dodge today… It’s national cowboy day today so I bet it’s going to be absurd today!

The First Day of True Intentsity

So the morning was just fine. We drove down to the Eisenhower museum, saw the exhibits, visited the house and bought some postcards and posters of that iconic photo with Eisenhower and the 101st because my grandpa is in it (casual, I know). His boyhood home was cool:

20140724-083750-31070634.jpg
And I got mom and dad to pose with Mamie and Ike in Eisenhower’s presidential library:

Then we visited their resting place and I took a photo all alone outside:

Because it was in honor of the photo we took two years ago there:

Then we headed for our campsite in New Mexico – an at least 9 hour drive. Let’s just say we didn’t make it that far hahaha. The view on the way was full of wind turbines:

Then we got into Dodge City to stop for lunch:

Andddd at a busy intersection the car started beeping like crazy and then the transmission shut down. Dad and I got it through the intersection, him and some randos pushing and me steering. And it’s not like the car is old… It’s actually a brand new 2014 ford focus. It wouldn’t even turn on after that. We had to wait for a while for the tow and then mom and I stayed at the gas station because here wasn’t enough room in the tow truck:

Turns out the tow truck guy was really nice and used to live in Buffalo. Mom and I had no idea because we were eating fried chicken and okra in a gas station watching teen jeopardy. Then Dad rolled up in this:

We headed back to the dealership and they still aren’t quite sure what’s wrong with it but they’re pretty sure we need a new transmission. In our brand new car. Super. We were quite lucky that we were in a town though because we could have been in the middle of nowhere. So they let us take the truck for the night and we checked into a best western. I had mentioned at one point that I wanted to get a new cowboy hat on this trip and on our way to dinner dad pulled into a western shop and we looked around and I bought a new one. When I was little I loved Toy Story and when we went to Mexico we were each allowed to pick out one thing we wanted to buy. I wanted a cowboy hat. I was only six or seven, but I remember the walls lined with hats and getting to pick one out. I picked a wide brimmed white one with a black band and a feather. I loved that hat. We walked out of the shop with me sporting my brand new hat and a man yelled to me (in Spanish) and gestured about how we had the same hat. I was so proud to be a real cowboy. I was informed later years that this glorious encounter was actually with a very very intoxicated man. Oh how youth can make things innocent. So I got one that looks a lot like the one that is now too small for my head that hangs on my wall:

Then we had some tasty Mexican food for dinner. I had a coke from Mexico and because of that it has cane sugar! Then we headed out to the casino to blow some money… We weren’t good at it and only spent thirty dollars… Dad was doing good for a bit! The guy at the slots next to us was putting in hundreds… It was crazy!:

Then we hit up DQ for ice cream to eat our feelings and then went to bed.
In the morning we ate breakfast and headed to the ford dealership, where they told us that the computer to the transmission fried and that the transmission was fine. We need a new computer and they’re going to hopefully get it in tomorrow. Rough news since we are paying for the house in Santa Fe tonight, but what can you do. So we hit up the Boot Hill museum – watched a gun fight, saw te old cemetery and got to walk through the old village:

We thought about getting this sign on our way out but didn’t:

So we are still in Dodge City, but hopefully only for tonight!!
